Obituary for Hattie M Shreve

Former Hastings resident Hattie M. Shreve, 81, passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at Harvard Rest Haven in Harvard, Nebraska.

Private family services are to be held at a later date. DeWitt Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Hastings, Nebraska is handling arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to her family for a later designation.

Hattie was born July 3, 1937, in St Francis, Kansas, to Jack and Margaret (Hanes) Merklin. At a very early age, she lived with Bill and Irene Gooder, who raised her. She attended school in several Nebraska cities, Including Trenton, Benkelman, Parks, then back to Benkelman, and Sidney. Hattie moved to Hastings in 1953. She married Dennis Vap on January 23, 1955, from this union three children were born; Sherry, Denise, and David. She and Dennis divorced in 1970.

In July of 1975 she married James B. Shreve, he passed away on New Years Eve 2006. Hattie worked at Geyerman’s Ladies Ready to Wear from 1954 to 1958, from there to Dutton-Lainson Company from 1958 to 1970 as a welder, and in 1970 she went to work at Hastings Industries as a welder and remained there until they closed. She went to work at Debus, later Metz Bakery. In 1982, she went into residential house cleaning on her own and in 2002, when Jim became ill, she then quit to keep him at home and take care of him. Hattie enjoyed cooking for family holidays when everyone could be together. She delighted in sewing, refinishing and reupholstering old furniture, reading, writing poetry, happy times, fun times, a good joke, and a good laugh with true friends.

Hattie is survived by her children, Sherry (Dick) Shaw, Denise (Steven) Johnson, and David Vap; seven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and caring neighbors, Jeff and Liz Worth.

She was preceded in death by her husband; and grandson, Justin Shaw.
