Obituary for Pam Bohmfalk

Hastings resident Pam Bohmfalk, 63, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2018, at Bryan Medical Center West in Lincoln, Nebraska. Throughout her life, Pam was an energetic and outgoing person who freely shared her loves of travel, music and food and cooking with friends and family.  

Pamela Parr Bohmfalk was born August 6, 1954, in Raleigh, North Carolina, daughter of Charles A. and Jewel (Borders) Parr. She graduated from MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas, with the class of 1972. Pam received her undergraduate degree in Education from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas in 1975, and her Masters in Library and Information Science degree from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas in 1982. 

Following college, Pam taught social studies in Galveston, Texas. Pam married John Bohmfalk on December 28, 1979, in Galveston, Texas. After the birth of her daughter, Gen, the family moved from Austin, Texas to Conway, Arkansas, then to Fresno, California and Dodge City, Kansas. In 1993, they moved to Hastings, Nebraska where she served as the Assistant Director of the Hastings Public Library. In 2014, she became the Instructional Services Librarian at the Perkins Library on the Hastings College Campus. 

Throughout her life in Hastings, Pam was actively engaged in community service. She served on the board of Kool-Aid Days and the Hastings Literacy Board along with helping with the Lark and Listening Room and the Hastings Downtown Center Association. She was a member of the local committee for two Humanities Nebraska Chautauqua events in Hastings and was also a member and officer of the American Literature Club of Hastings. She was a member of and served in leadership positions in the Nebraska Library Association, Mountain Plains Library Association, and the American Library Association. In 2012, Pam was awarded the Excalibur Award for Outstanding Public Librarian from the Nebraska Library Association. She was also a member of the Ardyce Bohlke Torch Club, the Westernaires Square Dance Club of Hastings and an officer in the Central Federation of the Nebraska Square Dance Association. Pam was in both the chancel choir and bell choir at the First United Methodist Church, where she also served on multiple committees and boards.

Pam is survived by her husband, John Bohmfalk of Hastings, NE; daughter, Genevieve “Gen” (Joshua) Hoffmann of Temple, TX; mother, Jewel Parr of Hastings, NE; brother, Greg (Lynnie) Parr of Boulder, CO; along with nephews, Jeff (Kelly) Parr of Colorado Springs, CO and Scott (Becki) Parr of Arvada, CO and her great nephews and great niece. Additional survivors include aunts, uncles and cousins of the Parr and Borders families, and John’s immediate and extended family that loved and adored her.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles A. Parr, and by several aunts and uncles.

A memorial service for Pam will be held at 2:30 pm on Sunday, September 16, 2018, in the French Memorial Chapel on the Hastings College campus in Hastings, Nebraska. There will be no viewing or visitation. Inurnment will take place at a later date. DeWitt Funeral Home and Cremation Services is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials for Pam may be directed to the Hastings College Foundation, the music programs of the First United Methodist Church of Hastings, or the Morrison Cancer Center in Hastings, Nebraska.
