Hastings resident William J. Melvin, 78, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare in Hastings.

Funeral service will be 11:00am, Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at the church of Christ in Hastings with Minister Russ Dudrey officiating. Viewing and visitation will be from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Monday, May 19, 2014 at DeWitt Funeral Home in Hastings.

Memorials may be given to Nebraska Youth Camp, 65 Sweetwater Ave, Kearney, NE 68847.

William J. Melvin was born December 13, 1935 in Angus, Nebraska, the son of Ervin and Pearl (Peters) Melvin. He graduated from Edgar High School with the class of 1954 and served his country in the US Army. William married Judith Maxon on September 13, 1959 in Ong, Nebraska. He was a machinist and took tool and die classes at Central Community College in Hastings. William worked for Hastings Industries and retired in 2000. He was a member of the church of Christ in Hastings where he served as an elder and a teacher and the Machinists Union Lodge #1569. William enjoyed gardening, tooling leather, fishing and attending his grandkids activities.

William is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judith Melvin of Hastings; children, Rhonda Hoselton and her husband William, Tony Melvin all of Hastings, and Julie Bruning and her husband Dennis of Edgar, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sister, Arlene Kort of Hastings; brother Leland Melvin and his wife Viola of Hastings; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; great granddaughter, Madeline; two sisters, Hazel Powell and Shirley Melvin; and brother, Vernon Melvin.
